Who, what and why - planning for 2020 Cheadle Arts Festival

Last night we had our first meeting to plan for the 2020 Cheadle Arts Festival. We ran a mixture of a 'wash up' meeting and a 'visioning' session. As meetings go, it was loose and unstructured, but the result was incredibly positive. Really encouraging was the energy and commitment to the 2020 Cheadle Arts Festival.

I am certain that we benefitted from the lovely, creative surroundings of the upstairs room at No16 Coffee House. Thank you Jayne, for your hospitality.

We kicked off the meeting by going back to basics - what is the Cheadle Arts Festival for? Why do we run it?
Answers included: to showcase local creative talent; to provide opportunities for people to experience different forms of the arts; to celebrate and promote Cheadle. We would like people to come to Cheadle especially to enjoy the arts festival and the town. Our aim is that the town - those that live, work and visit -  can share the benefits of having a festival.

What sort of arts are we talking about? Between us, we noted the following that we would like to include in the 2020 programme of events:

  • Art - paintings, drawings etc
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Crafts
  • Comedy
  • Writing & Poetry
  • Food-based art - 'edible art'.

At this point you would be forgiven for thinking that a group of keen locals drinking coffee or herbal tea in a cafe in Cheadle are not going to be able to organise all of that by themselves. The key is who we had around the table!

Insight and ideas were flowing from:
Jayne - business owner and Totally Locally
Rick Hermolle - Team Cheadle and the Carnival group.
Ashley Thompson - musical director who works with Leek and Biddulph arts festivals.
Rachel Slaney - Chair of local craft group
Lois Scragg - artist
Pauline Keates and Jenny Price - Cheadle Amateur Theatre Society (CATS)
Margo Colgate - artist and representive of U3A groups
Cyril Colgate - Chair of Cheadle Arts Forum
Catherine Doel - artist and rep for The Cheadle Academy and The Moorlands Primary Federation
Zoe Hunter - young member of Fusion group, Tean

and we had apologies and future commitment from
Debbie Rushworth - Support Staffordshire
The Cheadle Library Group who have nominated a representative to work on this.
and other artists and local business owners.

What we all agreed last night was that the 2020 Arts Festival needs to be a joined up approach to putting on a full programme of arts.

There are more groups and individuals who we would like involve, either in these planning meetings or delivering an aspect of the 2020 programme. If you or your group would like to find out more and get involved, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible.
